Couple the off-gassing with the fact that you likely paralleled a bunch of cells that are just waiting to short a plate, and you literally built a bomb. Without proper fusing of each parallel section of the array, a fire or explosion will result. The overheating battery will warp more plates that will short, and this will cause a chain reaction in the parallel array. The problem is that a shorted plate in one of the batteries can (will) cause that battery to overheat. On the other hand running batteries in parallel increases available current capacity while keeping voltage constant. Running batteries in series increases the voltage output, and if a battery plate shorts, the voltage simply drops by 1.25 per shorted plate. They off-gas hydrogen as part of the charging process and if not well maintained, will quickly short plates together either physically or by crystallization of electrolytes precipitate. The fact is that a "marine battery" is capable of an extremely high instantaneous current output (in the neighborhood of 400-1000 amps) at 12VDC. Most folks tend to think of "DC" and "car batteries" as harmless. Honestly, unless you have failed to disclose some critical rework details and the fact that you are an electrical engineer with experience in DC power systems, you are in way over your head. I certainly hope you told your insurance company about your DIY frankenups and warned those in your building that you built a fire waiting to happen. We took an old APC unit for a server rack, opened it up, and connected 4 Deep cycle car batteries to it and with this rig we get about 28-32 hours of run time.
